The Eyes of Love

It’s always been the same since the day I first met you. You walked into the room and my world stood still. Time stopped when suddenly in the midst of the crowd your eyes finally connected to my gaze and through my eyes I told you that you were the loveliest of them all. Somewhat embarrassed, your eyes smiled back and you sheepishly【sheepishly [′ʃi:piʃli] adv.怯懦地；羞怯地】welcomed my awkward【awkward [′ɔ:kwəd] adj.笨拙的；不熟练的；不灵巧的】 stare. That began our life together--and what a life our eyes have enjoyed!
Our young eyes enveloped each other at such a tender【tender [′tendə] adj.年幼的；未成熟的】age and in our innocence we stood facing each other, pledging our love and our life until death alone shall close the windows of our love. For six decades we have allowed our eyes of love to speak of our tomorrows and linger【linger [′liŋgə] v.继续逗留；徘徊】 in the coolevenings of yesterday’s memories.
Together we have seen the eyes of war, the eyes of hatred【hatred [′heitrid] n.憎恨；憎恶；敌意】; first on foreign soil as we fought for the freedom of others. Then the hatred was enflamed in our own land, from sea to sea, as people of all color sought and fought for equality. Recently, our eyes have held the terrifying memories of the depth of man’s depravity as the innocence of children was raped【rape [reip] v.；强夺；洗劫】 by terrorists…first here, then there. Our buildings collapsed but not our faith.
Our lifetime of love has allowed us to welcome the fullest expression of our union; the cycle of our life was birthed in her eyes and his and hers and his again.
There were many days we struggled through our tears to find our way. Those days were long and difficult, yet in the darkest of those nights, when I thought my eyes would never again greet the dawn of a new day, you courageously walked into the room, my eyes would touch you and the sun once again brought the dawn to our midnight storm.
It seems as if we simply blinked and the next day our eyes were joined with glasses; and though our vision had weakened【weaken [′wi:kən] v.削弱；减弱；减少；使变弱；使变淡】 our love grew stronger. Our children’s eyes have now captured the eyes of their mates and the cycle of sight continues. We have witnessed new eyes attempting to focus in their first moments of life and rejoiced【rejoice [ri′dʒɔis] v.欣喜；高兴；庆祝；欢乐】 as they smiled and said,“I love you Grandma and Granddad.”
From the first time my eyes introduced you to my heart, l have loved you and love you all the more in this final moment.
Though most of yesterday’s memories have escaped me, I still live for the moment you walk into my room. Tile【tile [tail] v.在……铺砌瓦（或瓷砖等）；在……装；使保守秘密】 light that is left in these eyes struggles to see clearly and yet there is one moment of every day that captures all the memories of the first day I saw you. Today, you walk into a much smaller room, barely enough space for my bed and your chair. Though my ears, struggle for the sounds of life, I recognize your steps and for a fleeting second I try to engage【engage [in′geidʒ] v.吸引；占用（时间、精力等）；使从事；使忙于；保证】 my mind to force my body to stand in your honor;but my mind has grown old with me and so I simply look up and wait for the glimpse of your face as you lean over my bed and say, “Good morning, Honey. How’s my guy today?”And now the moment for which I live, with every bit of strength I have remaining, I beg my eyes to twinkle【twinkle [′twiŋkl] v. （星等）闪烁；闪耀；（经光照耀而）闪闪发光；（眼睛）闪亮】 once more as the love of my heart welcomes you yet one more day. Today is a special day, for not only do you notice the sparkle of my eyes communicating my love but you also catch my faint attempt to force my left eye to wink and I remind you that you’re still my girl.

Old Phoebe said something then，but I couldn’t hear her. She had the side of her mouth right smack on the pillow，and I couldn’t hear her.

Sure I do. Don’t say that. Why the hell do you say that?” “Because you don’t. You don’t like any schools. You don’t like a million things. You don’t.”
“I do! That’s where you’re wrong — that’s exactly where you’re wrong! Why the hell do you have to say that?”I said. Boy，was she depressing me.
“Because you don’t，”she said.“Name one thing.” “One thing? One thing I like?”I said.“Okay.” The trouble was，I couldn’t concentrate too hot. Sometimes it’s hard to concentrate. “One thing I like a lot you mean?”I asked her.
She didn’t answer me，though. She was in a cock-eyed position way the hell over the other side of the bed. She was about a thousand miles away.“C’mon，answer me，”I said.“One thing I like a lot，or one thing I just like?”
“You like a lot.”

“Lawyers are all right，I guess — but it doesn’t appel to me，” I said.“I mean they’re all right if they go around saving innocent guy’s lives all the time，and like that，but you don’t do that kind of stuff if you’re a lawyer. All you do is make a lot of dough and play golf and play bridge and buy cars and drink Martinis and look like a hotshot. And besides. Even if you did go around saving guys’ lives and all，how would you know if you did it because you really wanted to save guys’lives，or because you did it because what you really wanted to do was be a terrific lawyer，with everybody slapping you on the back and congratulating you in court when the goddam trial was over，the reporters and everybody，the way it is in the dirty movies? How would you know you weren’t being a phony? The trouble is，you wouldn’t.”
I’m not too sure old Phoebe knew what the hell I was talking about. I mean she’s only a little child and all. But she was listening，at least. If somebody at least listens，it’s not too bad.
“Daddy’s going to kill you. He’s going to kill you，”she said. I wasn’t listening，though. I was thinking about something else — something crazy.“You know what I’d like to be?”“You know what I’d like to be? I mean if I had my goddam choice?”I said.
“What? Stop swearing.”
“You know that song‘If a body catch a body comin’
You must strive to find your own voice through the rye’?I’d like —” “It’s‘If a body meet a body coming through the rye’!”old Phoebe said.“It’s a poem. By Robert Burns.” “I know it’s a poem by Robert Burns.” She was right，though. It is“If a body meet a body coming through the rye.”I didn’t know it then，though.
“I thought it was‘If a body catch a body’，”I said.“Anyway， I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye and all. Thousands of little kids，and nobody’s around — nobody big，I mean，except me. And I’m standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do，I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff — I mean if they’re running and they don’t look where they’re going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That’s all I’d do all day. I’d just be the catcher in the rye and all. I know it’s crazy，but that’s the only thing I’d really like to be. I know it’s crazy.”
Old Phoebe didn’t say anything for a long time. Then，when she said something，all she said was，“Daddy’s going to kill you.”

杰罗姆 ·大卫 ·塞林格（1919-），美国作家，他的《麦田里的守望者》被认为是二十世纪美国文学的经典作品之一。塞林格在 1942年从军，1944年他前往欧洲战场从事反间谍工作。1946年塞林格退伍，回到纽约开始专心创作。他的第一本长篇小说《麦田里的守望者》一经出版就大获成功。他的作品还有《弗兰尼与卓埃》《、木匠们，把屋梁升高》和《西摩：一个介绍》和收录了他的短篇故事的《九故事》。

CNN - "Yesterday, America's space program took another historic leap for humankind. Today, the New Horizons team is bringing what was previously a blurred point of light into focus," NASA spokesman Brown said.
“We’ve never been this close to Pluto.” “Today, we get the first sampling of the scientific treasure collected.” Clear photos revealed the contours of the planet's surface and of its largest moon, Charon.
NASA on Wednesday revealed new images from the New Horizons spacecraft that flew by the dwarf planet Pluto one day earlier, giving a banquet of knowledge to scientists.
Among the discoveries are icy mountains, rising as high as 11,000 feet, which likely formed no more than 100 million years ago. That sounds like a long time, but not so long compared with the 4.56-billion-year age of the solar system. The area may still be geologically active.
The Pluto mission completes the reconnaissance of the classical solar system, and it makes the US the first nation to send a space probe to every planet in the solar system.
At its lightning speed, New Horizons still took nine years to make it to Pluto. It used the massive gravitational pull of planets in our solar system to help propel it, as it curved past them.
The flyby came 50 years after the Mariner 4 probe accomplished the first flyby of Mars, which sent back the first photos of another planet taken close up from space.
