The Silent Love

Anonymous

That bright springtime【springtime [′spriŋtaim] n.春天;春季;初期】, when they loved each other, she had scattered【scatter [′skætə] v.消散;分散;散播;撒播】 without him knowing it the branch full of bitter white of a cherry tree in bloom and a delicate【delicate [′delikit] adj.易碎的;娇贵的;纤弱的;娇弱的;精美的;雅致的】 petal had slipped, like randomly, in the envelope with the love letter. The petal had faded away before reaching the end of the long way, leaving behind it only a little spring perfume【perfume [′pə:fju:m]v.使充满香气;散发香气】 that made him smile like one does to a mild memory. And he didn’t know that she had been.

Next summer, when, for missing him too much, she had got closer without him knowing it. She was hiding only to send to him the call of love in that shell she had so long warmed up in her hands before making it roll over, down to his feet. The hesitating steps leaving melancholic traces on the sand had stopped near the pearly shell, brighter and so much different from all the others, and smiling, he had picked it up and thrown it in the sea watching long after it, as after a tender thought. And he didn’t know that she had been.

The sad autumn that followed, after he had driven her away. She was watching him from behind a tree without him knowing it and, kissing the falling leaf that had stopped in her hair. She had laid it on the water mirror slightly【slightly [′slaitli] adv.轻微地;稍微地;微小地】 touched by the mild September wind, blowing it towards him with all warmth of her heart. He had smiled to the tired leaf stopping at his feet without understanding why he had felt that he would have picked it up and embraces【embrace [im′breis] v.拥抱;围住;环绕】it against his chest【chest [tʃest] n. And he didn’t know that she had been.

That late winter when she won’t be any longer without him knowing it a snowflake【snowflake [′snəufleik] n.雪花】 made of silk and silver will fall down drop full of rainbows without knowing why, even smiling. He will feel like crying. And he will never know that she had been.

Snow White

In a beautiful country, there lived a king and a queen. They had a little princess. Her skin was as white as snow. Her lips were as red as a cherry and her hair was as dark as ebony. She was called Snow White. The family lived a happy life. But before long, the queen died.

The king married another woman. She was beautiful, but proud and arrogant. She couldn't bear anyone being more beautiful than her. She was a witch and had a magic mirror. "Mirror, mirror on the wall, who in the land is the fairest of all?" she would often ask." You, my queen, are the fairest of all," the mirror answered. Hearing this, the queen felt satisfied and roared with laughter.

As Snow White grew up, she became more and more beautiful. Everyone liked her, except the queen. One day the queen asked the mirror as usual, "Mirror, mirror on the wall, who in the land is the fairest of all?" "You, my queen, are fair. But Snow White is much fairer than you." Hearing this, the queen felt very angry.

The queen ordered her guard to kill Snow White secretly. The guard found Snow White in the forest. She was binding up a wound for a little bunny. The guard couldn't bear to kill her. "Run away as far as you can and never let the queen find you," he said.

Snow White ran into the forest. She wandered aimlessly, until she came to a small house. The house was unlocked and no one was in. There were seven tiny beds and a little table with seven little plates and cups. The bread was hardly enough for one bite and the drink was hardly enough for one sip. Snow White was hungry and tired, so she ate some bread, drank some juice, and fell asleep on the bed.

The owners of the house came back at midnight. They were seven dwarfs. They all liked Snow White at the first sight of her. The next day, when Snow White woke up, the seven dwarfs prepared her breakfast and a bunch of pink roses. Snow White told them her story. The seven dwarfs invited her to stay with them. In the daytime, they went out to work while Snow White did the housework at home.

The magic mirror told the queen that Snow White was still alive and living with the seven dwarfs. The queen disguised herself as a peddler and came to the dwarfs' house. "Would you like this red ribbon?" she said to Snow White. "Let me put it on for you." Snow White was happy to try it on. But with the ribbon, the queen seized Snow White by her throat. Poor Snow White fainted and she fell down.

At night, the dwarfs came back. They were terrified to see Snow White lying on the ground. They rushed to cut off the ribbon. Snow White came round slowly. The queen went back and asked the magic mirror, "Mirror, mirror on the wall, who in the land is the fairest of all?" "Snow White is still the fairest one." Hearing this, the queen was even angrier.

The next day, the queen disguised herself as a comb seller. She came to the house of the seven dwarfs' with a basket of poisonous combs. "I will have nothing to eat if nobody buys my combs," she said to Snow White. "Come and see my combs. Please!" Snow White took one comb. It was very beautiful. She couldn't help combing her hair. As soon as the comb was put in her hair, the poison began to work. Snow White fell down unconscious.

At night, when the dwarfs came home, they saw Snow White lying on the ground with a comb in her hair. They took out the comb and finally she woke up. The queen went back to the palace happily. "Mirror, mirror on the wall, who in the land is the fairest of all?" the queen asked. "Snow White," the mirror replied. "I must get rid of her!" the queen roared. She made an apple that was poisoned on one side.

Another day, Snow White was picking mushrooms in the forest. The queen disguised herself as a countrywoman and came to her. She gave her the apple. Snow White refused because she dared not eat anything from a stranger. "Are you afraid of poison?" the queen said. "Look, I will take a bite first. "The queen bit the half without poison. Snow White ate the other half. Immediately she fell to the ground and lost her sense. This time, the queen heard the answer she wanted from the mirror: "You are the fairest in the land."

On the dwarfs' way home, they saw Snow White. But no matter how hard they tried, they couldn't bring her back to life. The dwarfs were very sad. They couldn't bear to bury her underground. So they put Snow White in a glass coffin. Animals also came and mourned for her.

Snow White lay inside the coffin for a long time. Then, one sunny morning, a prince came by. He saw Snow White and fell in love with her. He wanted to take her back home. When his servants were carrying the glass coffin, it hit a tree. The poisonous apple was knocked out from Snow White's throat and she gradually woke up .

The prince asked Snow White to marry him and she agreed. A lot of people were invited to their wedding, including the queen. When the queen saw Snow White was the bride, she was driven mad at once. Nobody disturbed Snow White's life anymore. She and the prince lived happily ever after.

BBC news - A centuries-old brotherhood hidden in London

BBC news - Four hundred years ago, a fabulously wealthy arms dealer and moneylender named Thomas Sutton was approaching death. As part of his legacy, he decided to convert his magnificent London home, itself a former Carthusian monastery founded in 1371, into an almshouse and school.

He decreed that 80 impoverished gentlemen should be sheltered and fed there, and left a fortune equivalent to £200 million today to ensure his vision. The home became known as Sutton's Hospital at Charterhouse.

The beautiful 6.5-acre site, which includes medieval courtyards, a chapel, cloister and gardens, lies just behind an unassuming gate a few metres from Smithfield Market in the heart of the hectic City of London. And the property, though private, is open to the public for tours, which can be booked through its website.

Today, 40 men – called “brothers” – quietly inhabit the Charterhouse. In order to be eligible, they must be at least 60 years of age, professional, unmarried, in good health, in financial need and in need of companionship. The neediest come first. When applying to join the community, the men are asked: “How would you cope with community life?”

Recently, I spent a day at the Charterhouse. The atmosphere was half monastic and half donnish, and the overwhelming sense I got from the ever-bantering brothers was a sense of gratitude that they had found such a congenial place to retire to.

The day started at 8 am with voluntary morning prayers in the chapel. Breakfast was served at 8:30 am, with a choice of a full English or toast and muesli. After that was free time. The brothers might clean their flat, go for a walk, see the doctor or while the morning away in the gardens.

Formal lunch was served in the Great Hall at 1 pm: a jacket was required; most brothers wore a tie. We stood by our chairs at the long tables while a bell was rung, grace read and Sutton thanked. Pasta was followed by apple crumble. Some brothers paired their meal with half a pint of ale.

After lunch there was more free time. One group near the infirmary were having a singing lesson. Two brothers came in from a lunchtime pint at the pub. Others ambled off to write letters or to have a nap.

Evening prayer was at 5:30 pm, followed by dinner, an informal buffet, at 6:30 pm. Afterwards the brothers went out to concerts, the pub, watched television in their rooms, played bridge or attended a poetry reading group.

When I asked if any of them did paid work, one of the men said:“There is nothing to stop you working. It’s not against the rules,” Instead, I learned, there is really just one rule: “You must get on with people.”

The Charterhouse is planning to open a museum in the autumn of 2016 and create accommodation for 10 more brothers. Yet it’s likely that this will remain the quietest corner of London – and a haven of conviviality.
