The two woke late the following morning because of the night’s battle. For survival, they drifted across the plains, in search of food and water. They even found a new shelter, a shady area under a cliff (they didn’t dare go back to the old cave after the attack of the dire wolves).
They wandered the whole day.
And the next day.
And the day after that.
Soon, wandering had become their daily habits. They had learned how to avoid animals, how to catch birds, where to collect berries, and where to find water. They had learned how to survive.
One day, they were wandering as usual, picking berries off the trees when they heard a grumbling noise in the distant. The ground shook slightly. Mike and Annie raised their heads, and what they saw shocked them.
A dark cloud of animals was hurtling at full speed towards Mike and Annie! As the cloud got nearer and nearer, the noise grew louder and louder, and the whole world shook as if an earthquake was coming. Dust rose into the air as the herd raced forward, making it impossible to make out what animals were in the herd.
“A stampede!” Mike cried, “Let’s get outta the way, or else we’ll be squashed into pieces!”
Hearing this, Annie still did not move. She squinted hard, trying to make out the animals in the herd. The dark cloud was getting closer and closer; her curiosity rose. If she could just take a peek at what the animals were…
Mike knew better. He grabbed Annie by the arm, and dashed towards their shelter. The grumbling sound was getting louder, apparently, the animals’ speed was much faster than theirs. If the herd was another group of dire wolves, that would be the two’s biggest nightmare.
They sped along the dirt path, looking back from time to time. The herd was still charging towards Mike and Annie, as if trying to eat them in one gulp.
Mike pulled Annie’s hand harder. They ran with all their might. Suddenly, a rock the size of a palm struck Annie’s foot, she lost balance, tumbled, and fell. She screamed. Mike looked helplessly at her, because the herd was now too near for them to escape.
“Lie down!” Mike instructed, and Annie followed. They watched helplessly as the herd got nearer and nearer. Suddenly the dust that surrounded the herd faded; Mike and Annie could finally see what was in the herd: Plant-eaters, thousands of them, charging into the clearing towards Mike and Annie. There were horses, bison, deer, and even a few mammoths.
Annie suddenly understood. The plant-eaters weren’t trying to eat them, they were trying to escape, because some top predator was chasing them. And it was at this moment that Annie suddenly realized the danger that she and Mike were in--- if the plant-eaters step on them, they would be squashed to death.
“Hide!” Mike shouted. The animals were already upon them, first only several of them, then more came through, until swarms of animals were there. The two rolled and ducked, fearing at every moment that they would be stepped on; every several seconds, a hoof would land hard on the ground just a few inches away. The sound of clashing feet rang through the clearing, and as more and more animals came and went, Mike and Annie were getting more and more tired.
A much louder “thud” sounded beside Annie. As she looked upward, she saw the body of a huge mammoth. The mammoth loomed upon her, she rolled aside just as the gigantic foot of the mammoth landed with another “thud”. Just as Annie was beginning to feel relieved, she looked upward again, and saw another foot about to step straight into her face, and squash her to pieces!
The chapter ends as the mammoth was about the step on Annie. Do you think Annie could avoid being stepped on?这一章结尾讲到一只猛犸象还差一点点就要踩到Annie了。你认为Annie能够脱险吗?
