Far ahead of Annie, Mike was still trying to escape the saber-tooth tiger. His heart thumped, he could hear the saber-tooth tiger’s breathe now! He looked behind him and gasped, the saber-tooth tiger was just an inch away from him, opening its mouth wide for a good, delicious bite. I can’t stay alive like this for long, Mike thought.

Mike made a smart move: he rolled on the ground, quickly stood up again, and ran at a different direction. He ran, not caring about whether the tiger is near or not. The breathing stopped, there were no footsteps of cats.

He turned around, expecting to see the saber-tooth tiger’s snarled and twisted face but it wasn’t there. He looked around, and didn’t found the saber-tooth tiger’s shadow anywhere. Slowly, his muscle started to relax. His legs were sore, and he still needed to find Annie. The saber-tooth tiger is fast, but it isn’t good at turns.Mike thought, proud of the move he did.

But danger was never far away in the Pleistocene plains. Just as suddenly as the first time it appeared, the hidden saber-tooth tiger leaped out of the thin bush from behind Mike with a large roar. Mike tried to react quickly but his mind was too slow for such situation, and he didn’t have time to run. He did the only thing he can think off: he raised his hand to block.

A pain more than any other he had experienced before pierced his hand, and his eyes blacked out. He didn’t know how he had the energy, but he ran as fast as ever, and he heard sudden there were sounds of stumbling, roars, and Mike, not knowing when and where, lied on the ground, unconscious.

It was about evening that Mike adjusted his consciousness. He tried to stand up, but a pain pierced him and he winced, stumbled, and fell.

“Stay there, lie still.” A voice said from behind him. It was clearly Annie, and Mike tried to lift his head just a little to see his surroundings. He was in the cave again, there was a fire going, and on the nearby ground lay two gigantic razor sharp teeth. “Saber-tooth!” the thought hit Mike like a bolt of lightning. He instantly shot up and screamed. “Calm down,” said Annie to him, “It’s nothing now, the saber-tooth tiger is dead, I just brought these teeth to see if they can come in handy.” “Come in handy?” Marked asked questioningly. “Lie still,” said Annie, “then I’ll tell you.” Then Annie began:

“I fell behind when you tried to ran away from the saber-tooth, I was terrified thinking of the fact that you might be, well, dead, but I’m also scared to help, although at last I decided to see if you’re okay.

“Somehow there were some footprints of you on the ground and I soon began to follow them. The footprints went on intermittently, until it finally led me to this mountain full of lush plants near where the berries grow. Guided by my instincts, I soon began to climb up the mountain. Soon, I was on the top of the mountain. There were a few shrubs and trees, huge, heavy boulders, but the most distinctive feature was a huge 5-meter-deep hole in the ground with spikes at the bottom of it. I don’t know how, but I gained interest on that particular hole. When I looked down, I saw the saber-tooth, lying at the bottom of the hole, dead with its amber eyes still shining. I realized that the saber-tooth’s teeth can be useful for fighting off animals here in the Pleistocene. So I climbed down using the spikes as handles, and seized out the teeth from the body. I found you just nearby, with your arm all bloody and punctured. So, I dragged you here and that’s all there is.”

Mike couldn’t help smiling. He thought he would be dead meat but Annie changed everything, now he was alive, his arm recovering fast. Surly things won’t get worse,he thought.

He was wrong.

Question：
The chapter ends saying that Mike was wrong when he thought that things won’t get worse. In the next chapter, he and Annie would be attacked by another kind of predator. What do you think to predator would be?
