SKYE SPEAKING OF
Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier
【Skye
Daphne Du Maurier’s 1938 bestseller Rebecca in many ways fits into the gothic tradition, for it combines elements of a haunted mansion, romance, murder, suspense and horror. The opening line is memorable—“Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again”. Throughout, Manderley, the great mansion, breathes and trembles as a living being. But Manderley, at this point has been burnt down, and the whole novel is written in flashbacks. We’re told the young heroine is at her early 20s, and she remains unnamed throughout the book. She meets Maxim de Winter, a gentleman 20 years her senior, in Monte Carlo. They quickly fall in love and get married after a fortnight, and after their honeymoon they return to Maxim’s estate, the beautiful Manderley in Cornwall.
Here the young wife experiences the trials of adapting to her new role as the hostess of Manderley, and what is more difficult, she has to face the menacing “presence” of Rebecca, Maxim’s dead wife who recently drowned at sea. Rebecca never appears, but comes alive through her reputation and others’ recollections about her. She seems to be the real heroine—handsome, attractive, capable and efficient. She is loved and admired by all the servants and locals, particularly by Mrs Danvers, the housekeeper and Rebecca’s old maid. Mrs Danvers is so much obsessed with the dead hostess and she treats the second Mrs de Winter maliciously, making her feel rather incompetent and shadowy against the vivid, powerful personality of Rebecca. It’s gradually revealed Rebecca is not so angelic as people had thought, and she is not drowned but perhaps murdered… What are secrets behind Maxim’s marriage with Rebecca? Who murders her? Who burns Manderley? I have to leave you there.
The novel is rich in texture and themes. I personally adore Mrs Danvers whose abnormal attachment to Rebecca is perhaps homosexual, and her malice and cruelty are what make the book gripping. Gender-wise, the book has a conservative tenor typical of the interwar England—the wild, unruly Rebecca is wiped out, whereas the nameless heroine’s modest, companionable femininity is favored for bringing a quiet, boring perhaps, home life. Rebecca was adapted to a thriller-mystery film in 1940, directed by Alfred Hitchcock, winning several Oscars.
QUOTATIONS
“Women want love to be a novel. Men, a short story.”
“I believe there is a theory that men and women emerge finer and stronger after suffering, and that to advance in this or any world we must endure ordeal by fire.”
“The moment of crisis had come, and I must face it. My old fears, my diffidence, my shyness, my hopeless sense of inferiority, must be conquered now and thrust aside. If I failed now I should fail forever.”(the 2nd, unnamed Mrs. d e Winter)
“But luxury has never appealed to me, I like simple things, books, being alone, or with somebody who understands.” (Maxim de Winter)
“I wondered how many people there were in the world who suffered, and continued to suffer, because they could not break out from their own web of shyness and reserve, and in their blindness and folly built up a great distorted wall in front of them that hid the truth.”
