Annie had no time to roll out of the away. She grabbed a stick from the nearby ground, and hit it at the foot of the mammoth. However, the stick broke when it hit the mammoth and dropped towards the ground. The confused mammoth hesitated, Annie saw the chance. She rolled aside, thinking that she had escaped, but instantly felt a sharp pain located in her legs, as if a hot knife had set her legs on fire. She heard a crackling sound, the sound of breaking bone. She howled in pain, and saw that her bone had stuck out of her skin. Although she had avoided to be stepped in the head, the mammoth’s huge foot had hit her legs, causing a serious blow.
Willing but unable to stand up, Annie crawled slowly and cautiously out of the swarms of animals. Each step was painful, and with each step she had to use all her might. Her legs were soaked with blood, she desperately tried to get out of the way of the fleeting animals. After countless of hard and painful steps, she finally managed to crawl out of the stampede without being stepped on again. There she lay on the ground, enduring the pain of the splintered bone.
Meanwhile, Mike was still busy ducking and rolling in the animal cloud. He had heard Annie’s wail for help, and was now trying with all his might to get to her. But his injured arm had prevented him to move fast. The stampede was not over yet; with amazing agility, Mike finally got out. What he saw struck him in horror.
Annie’s wound was far more serious than Mike’s. At the sight of Mike, Annie wailed helplessly again. Mike came over to Annie and patted the dust off her clothes.

“You okay?” Mike asked, although he already knew the real answer himself.
Annie did not respond.
“Let’s get back to our shelter.” Mike offered. Weakly, Annie nodded her head.
Mike carried Annie by hauling her on his back as he walked towards their shelter. Suddenly, he heard a loud roar nearby.
“What’s that?” Mike asked, fearing that they would need to fight another saber-tooth tiger.
Annie’s eyes instantly widened, “It’s the apex predator.”
“What?” Mike said, bewildered.
“All these deer, bison and mammoths were running like crazy, can you think of any reason for that? It’s because a predator is chasing them, and all these animals were trying to escape. That roar came from the predator.”
“What’s the predator? It is the saber-tooth tiger again?” Mike asked fearfully.
“It’s worse than the saber-tooth tiger, see for yourself.”
The cloud of animals had ran away, a gigantic creature stood at the right of the clearing, feeding on a dead horse. Although the creature could not see them, Mike could see it clearly. His heart nearly jumped out of his throat.
The creature was the gigantic, infamous apex predator of the ice age, the Short-Faced Bear!
