63% of Africans Prefer China Over US

The US vs China war is further intensified as two-thirds of Africans say China has a positive economic influence in the region. Additionally, one-fourth of Africans would choose China over the US when it comes to business models for future development.

A recent survey on African public attitude conducted by Afrobarometer shows that 63 percent of Africans think China has a “somewhat positive” to “very positive” influence on the region. Only 15 percent see it as a “somewhat negative” or “very negative” presence.

According to Anyway Chingwete, one of the authors of the study, “Ordinary citizens have a positive sentiment because of the contribution China has made to Africa.”

“Of the largest players in Africa, China and the U.S. are the main countries,” says Chingwete. But when asked which country would be the best model for the future development of their country, 24% of Africans picked China.

“This shows that African citizens are welcoming China’s involvement,” Chingwete notes.

Respondents point to China’s investment in infrastructure as a contributing factor to its positive image.

The Asian superpower has been investing heavily in the region, particularly in areas of transportation and infrastructure. Among other things, it has provided funds for the construction of numerous bridges, hospitals and railway systems in several African countries.

Chinese Funds in Africa

It has helped fund the construction of a 400-megawatt hydropower plant in Ghana’s Bui Dam. The $600 million project has mitigated power shortages in that country. In addition, China has supplied credit worth over $2 billion to an oil refinery project in Angola.

Additionally, it has also invested in smaller enterprises and food outlets, the Afrobarometer report stated.

The study’s lead author Mogopodi Lekorwe points out that Africans also like the Chinese for bringing affordable cars and mobile phones to the continent.
