Mike looked out the window, peering in hope of the sight of a bright sun. Instead, what he only saw was the droplets of rain falling down from the sky, hitting the roof-tops and making a sound like a tatting drum. The sky was overcast: there was no chirping of the birds in the trees where they build their nests; no cheering of boys playing soccer on the green, pristine grass; there was only the honks of cars on the streets and the endless dropping of water.
This wasn’t a normal day for Mike, this was his birthday. But this isn’t a happy-and-fun kind of birthday; his father had died just two weeks ago and a day ago when he had asked for a birthday present from his mother, she had said, “Don’t you see? Our family are in lack of money! Besides, you’d gotten a ’C on both math and science, you should be studying! If it hadn’t been you getting such a bad score, I would had second thoughts about whether giving you a gift or not!”
Yes, it was true that Mike was falling behind in class, it was only the day before yesterday that his math teacher---Mrs. Somers, had chastised him after class about him terrible math score. But still Mike thought he deserved a birthday present on his birthday.
“Can you give me a moment of privacy?” he asked his mother. His mother, who was certainly surprised by this question, nodded.
Mike thundered out into the backyard, his mind swirling with anger. He sat down on a wooden bench, unsure of what to do next. Something red caught his eye, and he looked closely at it. It was a tiny gift box, about the size of a box just big enough to fix a watch. Slowly, he walked towards it, and picked it up. There was a note sticked to the box, on it was a familiar handwriting, and it read:
Mike was not surprised of Grandpa Jones giving a gift and a letter saying that he knows Mike was in desolation. Grandpa Jones always seems to know everything that's going on in the world, and he somehow managed to have not lots, but just enough money to not only maintain, but only enjoy his life, so he giving a small present to Mike wasn’t unordinary.
Slowly, Mike carefully opened the gift box, this may be his last gift in the rest of his entire life now. Inside of the box, was two small mirrors, each about the size of a Ping-Pong ball.
A droplet of rain splash down from the sky and Mike stared as the rain droplet dropped on one of the mirrors, and instead of it sliding of the glass surface of the mirror, it sank into the mirror and disappeared, causing the whole mirror’s surface to twist like goo. The mirror, once reflecting Mike’s surprised face, get all fuzzy and unclear.
Mike’s curiosity rose, and he moved his finger towards the mirror to touch its surface… The instant his finger touched the edge of the mirror’s surface, strange things started to happen. The mirror started to suck Mike’s finger into itself, Mike screamed, but the mirror just keep pulling Mike in, and away from the outside world. His eyes popped out of his head, and the whole world did a 360 degree turn, and Mike black out.
To be continued...
