FALSE - Only Special, Talented People are Creative

I hope I'm not going to uspet you but I want to disagree with the commonly held opinion that only special, talented people are creative.

Many people think that creative people are born that way.

I beg to differ. I beleive that we are born equal, or at least with an equal creative ability.

Have you ever watched a baby experiement?

How to turn from back to front, how to crawl to walk, to make sounds. It's something all babies do.

It is the ability to try, try, try again plus some active encouragement and support from the local environment.

Creativity is the same process.

Creativity, like a baby learning to walk, needs a mix of confidence that I CAN DO IT plus support from the local environment.

However, often both as children and adults we lose our confidence.

I can't do that. I'm not creative. Too often people confuse technical skills with creativity.

The notion that geniuses such as Shakespeare, Picasso and Mozart were `gifted’ is a myth, according to a study at Exeter University.

Researchers examined outstanding performances in the arts, mathematics and sports, to find out if “the widespread belief that to reach high levels of ability a person must possess an innate potential called talent.”

The study concludes that excellence is determined by:

  • opportunities

  • encouragement

  • training

  • motivation, and

  • most of all, practice.

Mozart trained for 16 years before he produced an acknowledged masterwork.

So what do we need to do to release the "creative me" from the "I can't do it dungeon"?

Let me share with you some points from a 1999 HP Annual Report regarding workplace creativity. (Btw - HP started life in a garage)

  1. Believe you can change the world.

  2. Work quickly, keep the tools unlocked, work whenever.

  3. Know when to work alone and when to work together

  4. Share – tools, ideas. Trust your colleagues.

  5. No politics. No bureaucracy. (These are ridiculous in a garage.)

  6. The customer defines a job well done.

  7. Radical ideas are not bad ideas.

  8. Invent different ways of working.

  9. Make a contribution every day. If it doesn’t contribute, it doesn’t leave the garage.

  10. Believe that together we can do anything.

  11. Invent.

In short it says have confidence and experiment.

I want to invite you to a creative experiment on Tuesday (of course).

This week we will be hosting our Creative networking evening at O'Pasta.

O'Pasta has an amazing pasta bar with numerous types of pasta, and a large number of ingredients for topping and a wicked range of sauces - Perfect for a Creative Pasta Challenge.

All you have to do is to get creative and decide what bits and bobs you want to put together to make your ideal pasta meal.

Don't worry! You don't have to cook it yourself. The O'Pasta chef will cook it for you.

Nearly forgot to say that there is no entrance fee for this event.

You only have to pay for your own consumption and you might even be able to eat for free!

The O'Pasta team will be giving a prize of a free meal to the inventor of the most creative pasta.

As stated, there is no entrance fee for this creative networking evening and we are expecting a high attendance rate so PLEASE hurry to RSVP via the READ MORE link.
