Author:Jason Zhang
Annie gulped. She had never seen such bloody battles before. And she had never even dreamed that she would be involved in one.

But that’s the truth. And the more Annie thought about it, the more she believed it, and the more Annie prepared for her doom.

Mike was still lying on the floor, paralyzed by horror and staring at the short-faced bear as it advanced slowly towards them, eyes filled with curiosity. His mind was blank, totally blank, and the world seemed so far away from him now. He was not thinking of a plan, not trying to escape anymore. He was weary and tired, tired of living in this terrible ice age. He could not bear the pressure of survival anymore. He, like Annie, prepared to die. The spark of hope was diminishing every second.

The ground thumped louder and louder as the bear got closer and closer. Mike and Annie didn’t dare to budge, they were like two statues, face with no expression and not saying a word. There was silence, except for the short-faced bear’s footsteps.
It was Annie who broke the silence. Shivering, she slowly walked towards Mike. They huddled together, Annie whispered, “What do you think?” “About what?” Mike asked questioningly. Annie pointed one little finger towards the advancing short-faced bear, “Should we give up our lives that easily? Or shall we fight the unbeatable?” Mike looked at Annie, and in an instantly, as if Annie’s two little questions were a key, the spark of hope fluttered, it grew in Mike’s heart, and burst into flames. Within seconds, Mike suddenly felt confident, he answered to Annie, “I think we should try to fight it.”

The short-faced bear was still curiously circling Annie and Mike. It had never seen humans before and were interested in this new kind of prey provided before it. It did not know that humans weren't such an easy prey to catch.

Suddenly, the short-faced bear saw the two human dash down the path before it, and climbed onto a huge rock surrounded by trees. The short-faced bear followed them; it was still not sure what to do with this new kind of prey, whether to eat them or not.
“This rock is an excellent place to fight the short-faced bear.” Mike said, “The rock is higher than the ground, so we can attack from above; it’s also circumfused with trees, so the bear couldn’t attack from behind.” Annie nodded in agreement, and pointed to the bear, “It’s coming.”

The short-faced bear was already upon them, sniffing noisily, stomping the ground. Thinking that the short-faced bear was going to attack at any moment, Annie picked up a heavy rock from the ground, and threw it at the bear. However, restrained by her wound, the rock missed, and brushed the bear’s fur. But the bear was easily outraged. It roared at the sight of being attacked, shot its furious and menacing eyes at Annie, and thumped towards the two.

The real battle had just begun.

Mike was ready. He pointed to one of the trees that were surrounding the rock and said to Annie, “I’ll haul you up that tree, you can sit on one of the branches. The bear won’t get you easily if you’re so high up.” Annie nodded, but then said, “Ok, but how about you?” “I’ll fight the bear with the saber-tooth.” Mike said with confidence.

Annie looked worried, but then smiled and said, “Ok, I’m sure you have a Plan B.” She gave Mike the two canine teeth that she had been taking with her the whole day.

Moments later, Annie was on the tree. The short-faced bear stomped angrily towards Mike, and swatted one huge paw towards him. Mike dodged the attack calmly, and waited for a better opportunity to strike.

The short-faced bear sent assault after assault, with each Mike dodged skillfully; he would not attack before he had already tired the bear.

But the bear never seemed tired. Every time the bear missed Mike, it would become angrier, and strike again with equal force. So in the end, it was not the bear who became tired; it was Mike.

Mike was running out of energy fast. The days in the Ice Age had worn him out already; now he needed to deal with the attack of a gigantic bear, he just didn’t have the might. He was sweating all over, his hands and feet were beginning to feel numb and weak. I need to end this battle quickly, Mike thought, or else I will eventually have no more strength to fight at all.

Annie was getting more and more anxious as she sat on the tree and watched Mike dodge the short-faced bear’s attacks. She wanted to believe that Mike could defeat the short-faced bear, but she feared that the reality was not always as she hoped. She wanted to help, she wanted to fight side by side with Mike. But she could only sit there on the tree and watch.

Mike suddenly had an idea. When the short-faced bear swiped its huge paw at him once again, he rolled on the ground to avoid being hit, and before the short-faced bear was ready for another assault, he stabbed one of the saber-teeth into the bear's foot. The bear roared, it tried to gain it's balance, but Mike tripped it with his foot, and the bear instantly fell to the ground with a tremendous thump.

"Yes!" Annie shouted from above. She was so relieved that Mike had made it, so happy that they had not lost hope in their lives, "We survived!"

Mike smiled. "Yes, we've made it."he said to Annie.

Then there was a stir from behind Mike. Annie's smiling face turned pale. Slowly, Mike turned around to see what it was.

The short-faced bear wasn't dead after all. It was still very much alive, although limping of the serious wound the saber-tooth had caused. It roared in fury at Mike, the ground trembled, several birds flew off in the distant. Mike clenched the other saber-tooth, it was the only weapon he had left now.

Without warning, the short-faced bear charged at Mike. Mike didn't have time to prepare, he was still in shock. He saw a blur, then felt a heavy bear-paw bat his stomach, and the next second he was flying through the air, until he hit the ground hard.
He didn't even have the energy to say "ouch". His head rang with pain and exhaustion, his vision was blurry. He saw faintly that the short-faced bear was upon him again, ready to swipe its huge paw that him for a quick kill.

This time, he did not try to resist the bear. He was too tired. His mind was blank, and so were his eyes. He felt as if he was about to go to another world.

Suddenly he faintly saw a huge rock sailing through the air. He straightened up, and saw more clearly that the huge rock had crashed into the short-faced bear. The short-faced bear was sent down onto the ground. Mike saw the chance, lead by his instincts, he stabbed the last wound into the heart of the short-faced bear. Instantly, the bear roared in agony. Blood streaked down the wound, the bear's whole body shaked wildly, until it stopped moving anymore.
The bear was finally defeated.

"Yes, I did it!" Annie screamed excitedly from above Mike. "You did what?" Mike asked questioningly.

"When you told me to climb up that tree so that the short-faced bear wouldn't get me easily, I was a bit worried about you." Annie explained, "So I decided to prepare a backup weapon in case you couldn't cope with the bear by yourself. I found this huge rock just on the ground and I took it with me onto the tree. You know the rest of the story."

Mike was surprised by Annie's intellengence and bravery. Although it was he who killed the short-faced bear, Mike thought Annie was the one who saved the day.

"What a long day!" Annie yawned and said. Her leg injury was recovering quickly, with Mike's help, she managed to climb down the tree. "Let's get back to our shelter," she said, "I don't want to meet anymore apex predators."

Mike couldn't agree more. The day was full of challenges, now all he needed is a rest.

By the beatiful sunset they tiptoed their way to their shelter, and fell asleep as soon as their head lay on the muddy floor.
