NFL tells teams to stop giving updates on players with concussions

The NFL wants to put the kibosh on teams talking about their players concussions.

Troy Vincent, the league's executive vice of football operations, told coaches and general managers to stop commenting on their players' concussion statuses and when they will return to the field, Pro Football Talk reported.

Coaches and GMs are to “refrain from making public comments regarding the condition of a concussed player or speculating as to when he may return to practice and play once in the concussion protocol,” Vincent said in his note.

Instead, the NFL wants teams to respond with the generic statement that "the player is in the concussion protocol under the supervision of the medical team, and the club will monitor his status.”

The strict instructions should help bring clarity to situations like that of Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith, whose concussion status was unclear after he sustained a late hit during Kansas City's game against Indianapolis, PFT notes.
